Civil war or not, the conflict in Syria has wide-ranging ramifications for the Middle East and the Arab World. Should the Assad regime fall, Iran would find itself isolated. Without its Syrian allies, Tehran would be vulnerable to greater political and perhaps military pressure. As the United States seeks a resolution against the Assad regime, Russia is also trying to maintain its influence in the region. Doctor Alexey Muraviev fears that the conflict could spiral into a proxy war as multiple sides look to control the situation.
