Same-sex female couples in South Australia may finally join the rest of the nation in gaining legal access to IVF. A Bill which has been proposed for the second time, was passed in the Upper House last night in the aim to amend the original law which denies gay couples the right to legal and safe IVF.

The Assisted Reproductive Treatment (Equality of Access) Amendment Bill was introduced as a Private Members Bill by Social Inclusion Minister Ian Hunter. After facing opposition in the past, the Bill went through the Upper House with 12 votes to nine votes. Mr Hunter, along with many other equality activists, is hopeful it will soon pass the Lower House to become SA law.
