In a historic speech, Victoria has become the first government in the world to formally apologise to people convicted under historical laws against homosexuality. Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews said the Government had failed its first priority to keep people safe. Until 1981 those charged with homosexual offences in Victoria  faced up to 15 years in prison. In his speech today the Premier said, “These laws cast a long, dark shadow of prejudice that still stands today”. Those impacted by the ongoing implications of these laws and homophobia in general, see this apology as an important step in the right direction.
