You could be forgiven for forgetting who’s leading New South Wales sometimes. Last night, Kristina Keneally won a leadership ballot against the now former premier, Nathan Rees. Political observers are saying it’s an historic moment since the state leadership and deputy leadership are in female hands. But how does this constant change of hands and the factional divides within the Labor Party affect New South Wales’ ability to move forward and improve? Associate Professor Rodney Smith from the Department of Government and International Relations at the University of Sydney explains how this happened and what it means for the state.
