Australian mosquitos may be annoying, give itchy bites and sometimes pass on Dengue Fever. But in many parts of the world, they are carriers of an unforgiving killer. Malaria, a potentially deadly parasitic disease, is spread through the bite of particular types of mosquitos, found mostly in Third world countries. It is thought to kill one person every 15 minutes. But news this week could finally bring hope to millions of people throughout the world. CARE Australia worker, Zamina Nasir, spoke to Catherine Graue about her experiences and the devestating effects malaria has on those it infects. Queensland Immunologist, Professor Michael Good, told Shamin Fernando about his research – a vaccine for malaria which may be available in three years.
