French President Nicholas Sarkozy has condemned the wearing of the Burqa as unacceptable in French society. Addressing both chambers of parliament in the Palace of Versailles yesterday, Mr Sarkozy said that the complete veiling of women is a symbol of subservience stripping women of their dignity. The President’s views have created an outcry in Muslim communities around the world, including in Australia. The Wire’s Anne von Fehrn’s report begins with Ghena Krayem, Expert on Islamic Law in Australia and a Muslim herself.
