Paid surrogacy industry in India or the “rent-a-womb” industry, as it has been labelled, is becoming an increasingly popular option for Australian couples. With couples paying a surrogate upwards of $30 000, it has been argued that this is a case of affluent westerners exploiting those in developing countries. Although it is illegal in Australia to pay a surrogate, it is acceptable under an “altruistic” notion, but according to Associate Professor, Anita Stuhmke these laws should be changed.
