The riots on Christmas Island have put the spotlight on just who is being detained in the island’s processing centre. Immigration Minister Peter Dutton has caused a storm in New Zealand by labelling the NZ detainees ‘hardened criminals’. If people who have committed very serious crimes in the past are being held side by side with genuine asylum seekers it raises questions about the culture within the centres.
