When we hear about housing in Sydney, it’s generally about mortgages, million dollar views and booming house prices. But what about the other end of the market? A lack of affordable housing causes considerable economic and social stress for up to 250,000 low-income households in Australia, where paying the rent often means missing out on other basic necessities like food or clothing. Last year, an unusual alliance formed between welfare organization, the Brotherhood of St Laurence, and business group the Committee for Economic Development of Australia. The result was a report called Better Housing Futures: stimulating private investment in affordable housing. James Fletcher spoke to Sally Jope from the Social Action and Research Department in the Brotherhood of St Laurence.
