Why are so many skilled immigrants working as cleaners in Australia?

They might be doctors, engineers or scientists in their home countries – but when highly qualified migrants arrive in Australia, via the Federal Government’s skilled immigration program – too often they end up stacking shelves. Dr Regina Wagner, from the Centre for Learning and Social Transformation at the University of Western Sydney has just completed extensive research into this problem. She found that Australian employers often won’t recognise experience and qualifications gained overseas. Abu Bangura is a skilled immigrant from Sierra Leone.
