New legislation introduced this week will mean anyone living in Western Australia can access information about sex offenders living in their area. Photos, names, date of birth and the alias of an offender will be available by simply typing in your postcode.

Police Minister Rob Johnson said the register can be used as a tool for parents to protect their children. There is already a national sex offenders register but it’s only available to Police, not the general public. The Australian Lawyers Alliance is strongly opposed to the new state register saying it will lead to vigilante behavior.
