The NT Ombudsman is currently examining a claim that three teenagers were subjected to inhumane and unsafe treatnment after being transported from Boroloola to Darwin in the back of a paddy wagon – a distance of more than 1000 kilometres. Last year a young man was killed after being thrown from the back of a paddy wagon in the Kimberley. Deaths In Custody Watchdog spokesperson Jim Duffield says both incidents highlight the double standards shown by police in supporting road safety but allowing prisoners to be moved around without seat belts
