Roger Graef is a legend among documentary makers. The British criminologist has become famous for what’s known as cinema verite – where he spends hours and days filming real life as it happens, usually inside institutions like prisons, police stations and other places normally closed to public eyes. His films have been credited with raising public debate and making a real difference through their very simplicity. Graef spoke this week at the international documentary makers conference in Adelaide.
