Afghanistan has recently been outed as the world’s top narcotic state, with estimates saying the country provides ninety percent of the world’s opium supply. The big problem is that this enormous illegal trade is the bread and butter of many Afghanis’ finances. Economically, the country is held together by the drugs. The West are storming into Afghanistan once again to help clean the country up, but Andrew Vincent, director of the Centre for Middle East Studies at Macquarie University says these eradication drives don’t strike at the heart of what is a hugely complex problem.
