Student services such as welfare support, sporting activities, legal advice and financial advice have always been funded by compulsory student union fees. But after the Howard government abolished this fee in two-thousand and five, it is now voluntary. This debate is back on the agenda after the government’s bid to introduce a two-hundred and fifty dollar fee for university students was defeated in the senate.
