The Commission of Audit report released today was a chilling precursor to next week’s Budget. It recommends savage cuts to government departments and services, and devolution of many federal responsibilities, including education to states. The changes are based on a small government, competitive ideology popular with the business community, who dominated the Commission. Critics say its methods lack transparency and its recommendations have the capacity to seriously change the role of government.
