Senate inquiry into torture allegations begins

The debate over Australian involvement in Iraq was reignited last month after former defence officer and weapons inspector Rod Barton claimed he had interrogated scientists in Camp Cropper near Baghdad. While the federal government has dismissed his claims, arguing that there’s a distinction between an interrogation and and interview, a senate inquiry to examine Barton’s claims opened in Canberra today. Senator Andrew Bartlett, Democrats’ Deputy leader, told Christine Baker there were many outstanding issues to be resolved.
