Baxter protesters defend their actions

TV news reports have been filled with scenes of protestors clashing with police, with more than 400 pro-refugee activists converging on the Baxter Detention Centre in South Australia over the Easter long weekend. Today five protestors from Western Australia, who were arrested for cutting a portion of the detention centre fence, released a joint statement defending their actions as “morally right”. One of the activists, Kristo Newall, told Christine Baker how they came to be arrested.
