Refugee-friendly country mayors hesitant about housing asylum seekers

With Australia’s plans to process asylum seekers offshore effectively scuttled for now, the focus has turned to how to process asylum claims onshore. One of the ideas proposed by the Federal Government is to send asylum seekers to regional areas on bridging visas so they can live and work while their claims are fully processed.

But the Government is yet to secure the support of country mayors, whose views on the issue appear as diverse as the communities they represent.Even those enthusiastically helping resettle refugees have reservations about housing asylum seekers in limbo.
