With Indonesians about to go to the polls in the first-round of an electoral contest to decide who will be president in the world’s third largest democracy. Stephen Hill talked to Professor Greg Barton of Deakin University about what the likely election of Prabowo Subianto means for the state of Indonesian democracy.

According to Dr Barton, Prabowo has benefited from being able to gain a political association with the incumbent Jokowi administration through the nomination of Jokowi’s son Gibran for the vice-president role on his ticket.
