Peter Costello has again gone public on the government plans to solve Australia’s skills shortage by getting sole parents back into the workforce as soon as their children reach school age. Kath Silard is the author of several parenting books and director of Sole Parent Resource Centre SPARK. She says the first few years of a child’s school life are hardly the time for their parents to be under pressure to get a job particularly as many sole parent families are still recovering from the trauma of separation.
