The NSW Government has proposed changes to the law that could keep high risk offenders in prison indefinitely. The Attorney- General, Greg Smith, announced yesterday that the scheme will allow the state to detain a prisoner beyond their original sentence if they’re deemed to be ‘dangerous’ and they show no signs of rehabilitation. Greg Smith says the changes are about protecting the community from the “worst of the worst” such as murderers and armed robbers . The move has been praised by various victim support groups. But, critics of the proposal say that the changes interfere with the objectivity of the existing criminal justice process.
