In the UK, over the last 3 months 180 students in one high school were forced to take sick leave suffering the effect of the latest party drug, known as ‘miaow’. The incident is the latest report of a global increase in the use of ‘miaow’ or Mephedrone, a new drug on the party scene. In Australia, authorities have seized 23.4 kilograms of the drug this year alone and it is expected that seizures will increase as the drug grows in popularity.Mephedrone is popular because it combines the effect of cocaine with and ecstasy giving the user a feeling of euphoric invisibility. However, there are also disturbing reports of users self-mutilating while on the drug, leading experts to warn that we don’t yet know its full impact.
