Mundine: Aboriginal people should adapt to change
Incoming national president of the Labor Party Warren Mundine has prompted heated debate over comments he made during a speech to the Bennelong Society. During his address, Mr Mundine called for Aboriginal people to change in order to survive and also attacked Northern Territory Chief Justice Brian Martin for being too light-handed when sentencing an Aboriginal man who raped a 14-year-old girl. Also fuelling debate, leading member of the National Indigenous Council Wesley Aird called on Aboriginal people to question whether it was reasonable for them to disengage from society and still expect to be maintained by the nation’s taxpayers. Labor’s Member for Canterbury Linda Burney says Mr Mundine’s comments and those made by Mr Aird just don’t make any sense.
