The term ‘lateral violence’ was first coined by Canadian First Nation’s People around 6 years ago. It describes what happens when people living in oppressed communities start turning on each other. It is a term now being used in Australia, Human Rights Commissioner Mick Gooda spoke about ‘lateral violence’ in a key-note speech this morning, at a Native Title Conference in Brisbane. The Wire’s Wade Stephens asked Mick Gooda what are the signs of ‘lateral violence’ emerging within this country.
