Basin committee recommends shelving water buybacks

How to manage the water in the Murray Darling Basin has become a hot political issue – a parliamentary committee into the issue today delivered its findings. It made 21 recommendations including the stopping of current water buybacks. The Australian Conservation Foundation’s Dr Arlene Harriss-Buchan says the buyback program isn’t broke and doesn’t need fixing. Andrew Gregson from the NSW Irrigators Council says irrigators have concerns that the buybacks have been uneven and that a more planned approach is needed.
