Recently the corporate owners and restaurant manager of two Melbourne La Porchetta restaurants were heavily fined for paying their teenage workers below minimum wage and instead supplementing their income with complimentary pizza and soft drinks. The case has focused the minds of some who are concerned over possible changes to the Fair Work Act that will allow “non monetary” benefits to taken into account in agreements between individual workers and employers.
