Indonesia’s New Policy Towards Aceh
Although there’s not much news about it in the mainstream media, a serious problem still exists in the Indonesian province of Aceh. The Indonesian Government currently has the province under a state of emergency, although this is better than the martial law the Indonesians enforced after negotiations broke down with secessionist rebels in 2003. The new Indonesian President Susillo Bung Bung Yudhuyono has said that Indonesia will adopt a new appraoch to dealing with the separatist movement. But Amnesty International has called for an enquiry into human rights abuses in the region. Neil Smart spoke to Michelle Miller from Charles Darwin University about whether or not the new government has shown signs of change.
