Imagine if computers could feel emotions such as disappointment and affection. This is exactly what happens in writer-director Spike Jonze’s new film Her, where a computer operating system named Samantha behaves and interacts just like a human. Although she has no body, Samantha has such a convincing personality that her operator Theodore Twombly falls head over heels in love with her. Is Samantha likely to be confined to fiction? We look at whether this level of artificial intelligence is possible.
