The Multi-Party Climate Change Committee negotiations over the price of the proposed carbon tax received a boost with the release of climate change advisor Professor Ross Garnaut’s updated report. He’s recommended the carbon tax be set at a fixed price of $26.00 per tonne for three years before moving to an Emissions Trading Scheme. He also says the government should set up three independent bodies to oversee the administration of the scheme – and how the money raised from the tax will be spent – $11.5 billion in the first year alone. But Climate Change Campaigner for the Australian Conservation Foundation, Claire Maries, says $26.00 a tonne is not enough to change polluting company’s behaviour.
