Sydney’s annual Mardi Gras parade came and went in spectacular fashion at the weekend, with a whole new generation of gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender participants marching down Oxford St before tens of thousands of spectators – some for the very first time. One of the first timers was 19 year-old Jordan Zacharowitz.

A key figure in the very first parade back in 1978 – 58 year-old Peter Murphy – was also there. In the lead up to Saturday’s parade, Calliste Weitenberg shared the experiences of both to find out exactly what the parade means today.
