Over the last three to four years the Australian Government undertook extensive research to find out the extent of violence that exists in our homes and amongst young people. The government also commissioned a million dollar media campaign aimed at 16-24 year olds which was ready to go at the end of 2003, but was pulled at the last minute. The ABC’s 7:30 Report explored this issue last week, but since then the Government stated that the ad campaign was not pulled, just delayed. But community groups and services dealing with domestic violence have been left wondering what exactly John Howard didn’t like about the ads. Cinnamon Nippard spoke to Catherine Gander, Executive Officer of the NSW Women’s Refuge Resource Centre and Margot Scot training coordinator at the Domestic Violence and Incest Resource Centre in Melbourne.
