Our health is mostly determined by our lifestyle choices, but new studies have shown a correlation between the environmental, geographical and urban layout of our homes and the likliness to suffer from chronic diseases such as diabetes, cardiovascular diseases and obesity. People in low socio-economic areas are being targeted with an influx of fast-food outlets and often do not have easy access to bike paths or other recreation. UniSA’s Professor and Research Chair for Social Epidemiology, Mark Daniel, says people who live in areas laid out in a way to encourage physical activity are often healthier than those who do not.
