Coalition objects to rollout of automatic voter enrolment

A war of words has broken out between the government and opposition over a new system that will automatically enroll people that are eligible to vote. Modelling done on the change suggests that the new voters will often be young, and likely to vote Green or Labor. The new system could pick up 1.5 million voters who would otherwise not be on the electoral roll.

The automatic voter enrollment pioneered in Tasmania last month.But the Coalition has raised concerns that the changes could undermine the integrity of the electoral roll.
