Ghana holds democratic elections, but what does it prove?

In Ghana, elections held over the weekend saw the National Democratic Congress hold on to government – although with only the slimmest of margins. National observers are calling the election an example of Ghana’s robust democracy, after what was an overwhelmingly peaceful and free process. However for some, the election has only revealed the fragility of the democratic system it is supposed to enshrine. Concerns are being raised over the patterns of corruption within the political system which has led to the weakening of Ghana’s government institutions and their very capacity to govern effectively.
