The coronial inquest into the asylum seeker boat tragedy which left 50 people dead, including babies and young children has moved from Perth to Christmas Island to inspect the site of the disaster. Today WA Coroner Alastair Hope heard from locals who attempted to rescue the mainly Afghani and Iranian refugees after their wooden fishing vessel, known as SIEV 221, crashed off Rocky Point on December 15 last year. After an internal customs review and a parliamentary inquiry, the coronial inquest is still trying to determine just how this tragedy was allowed to happen.
