30 years since it was first introduced, China’s controversial one-child policy could be about to be rolled back. Amid worries that a fast-ageing population will have a negative effect on China’s economy, there is speculation out of Beijing that the much criticised population control policy—which is widely claimed to have prevented over 250 million births—may be in its last days. Archie Guattari looked at what the controversial family planning policy has meant socially and economically for the world’s largest population.
