Pakistani asylum seeker Ali Humayun faces imminent deportation back to his home country, despite his father and brother pledging to kill him if he returns. The Refugee Review Tribunal has ruled that the 26-year old man, currently being held in Sydney’s Villawood detention centre, has no right to claim asylum. This despite his declaration that he is Christian, gay and in a loving relationship another man, who was also formerly held at Villawood. The Refugee Review Tribunal ruled that because the relationship was formed inside detention, it was a case of quote “situational homosexuality”. The gay community has responded with outrage to the ruling. Greens Senator Kerry Nettle has also highlighted the need for sexual orientation training of the tribunal.
