A Turkish court has indicted 196 more people over alleged military plans to overthrow the government in 2003. Their supposed intention was to bomb mosques, assassinate religious leaders and to shoot down a Turkish military plane and blame it on Greece to create chaos. Former naval commander Ozden Ornek is among 30 newly indicted officers, and his diary of the alleged military conspiracy sparked the controversy when a Government-friendly newspaper published excerpts in 2003. The conservative Islamic ‘AK Party’ has been in power for nine years. Hundreds including soldiers, academics, journalists, politicians and even comedians have been charged with seeking to bring them down.
