A new report has found that 40% of young academics are planning to leave the sector in the next decade, raising fears of short-staffed universities as older academics retire and student numbers continue to grow. Universities have been overloading academics with administrative tasks while they continue to push them to publish work and attract funding.

With a workforce that is largely casualised and with little job security, younger academics are preparing to seek work elsewhere, leaving the future of Australian academia in doubt.
