The Western Australian election has been a tough contest for Labor. Political commentators say that the major parties ran on very similar campaign issues. In the last weeks of the election, desperate to clearly define a difference between themselves and the opposition, Labor turned to uranium mining. The Liberals and Nationals support uranium mining in Western Australia. Labor are unequivocally opposed to any mining at all. And while the general public seem galvanized on environmental issues, the economic benefits of uranium mining are hard to ignore. Particularly when native title owners accuse the Labor government of usurping their right to make profit from their land.
