Welfare groups campaign against Victorian ‘slumlords’

The conditions in Victoria’s private rooming houses are apparently so bad; many of the people who live in them would rather be on the street. This is according to welfare groups who have just launched a campaign urging the government to take action on the appalling conditions. The Tenants Union of Victoria, the Council to Homeless persons and the Victorian Council of Homeless services have united for the ‘Call this a home?’ campaign, to expose what they say is the seamy underside of Victoria’s lucrative private rooming house market. They’re calling for the government to introduce higher standards and licensing.
