A report released today by VicHealth highlights the disturbing number of Australians who are ready to excuse rapists and perpetrators of domestic violence. According to the report, one in five Australians agree that a woman is partly responsible for rape if she is intoxicated. One in six Australians also support the notion that when it comes to sex, women say “no” when they actually mean “yes.”

According to women’s rights campaigners, attitudes about gender stereotypes need to change if Australia is to see a decline in domestic violence and rape charges.
