Thousands of Indigenous Australians living with a mental or cognitive disability are imprisoned each year. A new study is looking at how Aboriginal people with mental and cognitive disability are being ‘managed’ the criminal justice system due to a lack of adequate community-based services and support. The study, which has been released into a series of articles, has found Aboriginal women were the most disadvantaged and are landing in prison because of serious policy and service gaps.
