The evolution of Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras

On Saturday the 5th of March, Sydney celebrated the 44th Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras all throughout the city, with over 40’000 people attending the parade held in the Sydney Cricket Ground.

Having grown from a protest to a celebration, the nature of the festival has evolved, while still keeping it’s core ethos of protesting for acceptance and rights.

In recent years, the parade has faced criticism for the amount of corporate sponsorship, causing some to question how much the parade and festival has changed.
