Psychiatrists have raised concerns over new legislation that legalises a limited level of possession and cultivation of cannabis in the Australian Capital Territory.

While agreeing with the Legislative Assembly that criminal charges for possession often do more harm than good for individuals’ mental health, they argue it may dupe consumers into viewing cannabis use as safe and harmless, when it is a known and recognised risk factor for young people developing psychotic illnesses.
