Taking morality out of the abortion debate
The Abortion debate has hit the head lines in Australia once again, with several high-profile Conservative, male politicians arguing the moral reasons for why women should not abort a child. However, organisations dealing with the issue of abortion on a daily basis seem to have moved on from the simplistic moral debate, and are focusing more on managing the reality. Although many are still opposed to the idea of abortion, those involved do acknowledge the fact that thousands of women every year will have to consider an abortion, and that they need information and support, instead of condemnation. The Wire’s Anja Kueppers spoke to David Yates, acting Chief of Staff of the Australian Christian Lobby. And to Dr Christine Read, Medical Director of FPA Health (formerly Family Planning NSW) about the issue.
