Surgery ‘boys’ club’ keeps costs high and women at a distance


Joan Arakkal found discrimination, sexism and  a medical specialty run like a mediaeval guild when she arrived in Australia ready to pursue her career as an orthopaedic surgeon. Her book Slice Girls tells her story. She believes only a Royal Commission can really tackle the ‘closed shop’ that is keeping women at bay, surgery expensive and waiting lines long.
