Many indigenous groups are calling the Gillard government’s “Stronger Futures” proposals a second version of the Northern Territory intervention. Under the bills, which replace the intervention laws, alcohol restrictions would be extended, and children’s attendance at school would be linked to welfare payments.

Dozens of community groups have sent in scathing submissions about the new laws to a senate inquiry, and a report is due to be handed down this evening. But few are expecting to have any influence over the legislation, as it’s likely the bills will be passed regardless.
