A spot check on a Victorian Nursing home has revealed cases of possible neglect- with two residents weighing under 25 kilograms. Management at the Kirralee Nursing Home in East Ballarat are now under police investigation, and the Department of Health and Aging are looking at 30 other nursing homes owned by the same aged care group. In 2007 the Howard Government introduced mandatory reporting of “elder abuse”, a term that covered severe physical or sexual injury… but with residents at the Kirralee nursing home suffering from lack of nutrician and hydration, many say that the current definition of “elder abuse” doesn’t go far enough.
